Tiles are available in an infinite number of sizes, shapes, colours, patterns and finishes. Your tile contractor or tile retailer may be able to provide you with suggestions on the best tiles to suit the room and use.

Sizes

  • Floor tile dimensions range from sizes less than 25mm square with mosaics, to as large as 600 x 600mm.

  • Most popular floor size tiles are 300mm x 300mm and 400 x 400mm, however there is a growing trend towards larger tiles.

  • The most popular size for wall tiles are 150 x 150mm and 200 x 200mm, but here again, there is a trend toward larger tiles.

Shapes

  • Square shaped tiles are usually the norm and most popular, but there are many other shapes available, they include: rectangles, hexagons, elongated hexagons, octagons etc.

  • You can also get tiles with various shaped edges such as, straight edges, arised edges, scalloped edges and cushioned edges that simulate handmade Mexican tiles.

Colours and Patterns

  • Like paints, tiles come it a variety of colours. Choose a colour to complement a favourite object or go with a theme, either way always get samples of the tiles. Place the samples in the room you are doing up. You will get a better feel of how the tiling will turn out.

  • Make sure you compare the tiles with paint colours and other design elements in the room. This will ensure there won’t be any costly design clashes.

  • Using patterns in the design makes for a more interesting look, but too many patterned tiles can be overwhelming. Smaller rooms especially should be kept to a simple design to avoid the closed in feel.

Finishes

  • Ceramic tiles come in various surface finishes, these include smooth surfaces, textured surfaces, simulating slate or stone, undulated surfaces that imitate handmade tiles, and gritty surfaces for slip resistance.
